How do I start
or join a Live Chat?
The user must first be logged in with a valid User ID and password. Once logged in an in a group, the user will see an icon that will say either "Start Live Chat" or "Join Live Chat". Clicking on this icon will launch the Live Chat board.
No, a student can not lead a Live Chat. Only users that are registered as tutors may enter a Live Chat as a leader.
How can I tell
if my Instructor, Tutor, or another user is in the Live Chat room?
If anyone is in the Live Chat room, the icon that normally says "Start Live Chat" will change to say "Join Live Chat". The total number of current users in the room will be displayed underneath the "Join Live Chat" icon. If a leader is present in the room, the name of the leader is also displayed underneath the "Join Live Chat" icon.
How do I know
if a Tutor is online?
If a Tutor currently has a Live Tutorial room open, an icon that says "Join Live Tutorial". Under the icon, the name of the Tutor is displayed, along with the current number of questions in the queue.
How can I interact
with a Tutor?
If a Tutor is currently online, a user can click on the "Join Live Tutorial" icon to launch the Live Tutorial room. When the Live Tutorial board appears, click the button labelled "Ask a Question". Then use the tools of the WWWhiteboard to create a question. Click the yellow "Submit" button to send it to the Tutor. The question is put in the queue for that room, and the user waits until the Tutor gets to the question. When the Tutor accepts the question, an audio notification will sound, and the user and Tutor will be interacting.
Where can I
find a schedule of when my Tutor or Instructor will be online?
If the Administrator for the group has posted some sort of online hours, they will be listed either in the text at the top of the page, or in the Group Notes section below the action icons.
How can I submit
an offline question?
When a user submits an offline question, they are using the Q & A Center of NetTutor. Offline questions DO NOT refer to a student emailing a question to a Tutor or Instructor.Once logged in, the user will see an icon that says "Q & A Center". Clicking on this icon will bring up a window that gives the user the option to "Ask Question" or "Retrieve Answer". To create a question and submit it, the user needs to click on "Ask Question". This will bring up a WWWhiteboard, where the user can create and submit their question.
How do I check
to see if my offline questions have been answered?
Once logged in, the user will see an icon that says "Q & A Center". Clicking on this icon will bring up a window that gives the user the option to "Ask Question" or "Retrieve Answer". To check the status of a submitted question, click "Retrieve Answer". This will bring up a listing of all the user's submitted questions and their status. Each question will be a clickable link, so the user can view their question or answer.
The Tutor answered

When viewing the returned answer from a Tutor, there will be a link below the image that says "ask a follow-up question". Clicking on this link will launch a WWWhiteboard, with the original question and answer included, and allow the user to annotate and ask more questions.

Bulletin Boards, and how can I use them?
The Bulletin Boards are a threaded message posting area, where anyone can post, read, comment, and reply to other user's messages. The Bulletin Boards are available 24/7, and do not require a Tutor or Instructor to be present or logged in. This is a place where users can have discussions about various topics, while still having the tools of the WWWhiteboard available.
What are the
Archives, and how can I use them?
The Chat Archive and Tutorial Archive are where interactive sessions are saved. The Chat Archive stores the Live Chat sessions, and the Tutorial Archives stores Live Tutorial sessions, as well as any archived Q & A questions. The Archives are organized by folders,which makes it easier for the user to find what they're looking for.The Chat Archive listings tells the user what the title of the session is, the date it was finished, and who the leader of the session was. Each listing also has a few clickable links. First is the chatlog link, which will display all the public chat for that session. To the right of the chatlog link are links to each page of the session. Clicking on these links will display the contents of that page of the session. Each of these session pages allow the user to respond or comment to the board, via the "include board" and "do not include" links near the bottom. Also, there could be files associated with this session, and they might be available for download. These will be listed after the session page links. If a user responds to a board, it will appear underneath the session listing.
The Tutorial Archive listings tell the user what the title of the archive is, who it was archived by, and the date it was archived. Clicking on the listing will display the archive. Users can ask a follow up question, by clicking the link at the bottom of the archive. This will submit an offline question to the Q & A Center for that group.
No, the user ID can not be changed in anyway after the account has been created.
How do I change
my password, or any other account settings?
After logging in, the user can click the link titled "Manage Account", located in the left frame. The main window will display the current information for the user's account, along with the groups that the user belongs to. Near the top of the main window, the user can click on the link titled "Update my Account". The main window will now allow the user to update and change information about the account, including the password and email address.
I belong to
more than one NetTutor group. How do I switch between groups?
If the user's account belongs to more than one group, they can switch to use another group by clicking the link titled "Home", located in the left frame. This will bring up a list of all the groups the user belongs to in the main window. Clicking on one of the group names in the main window will switch the user into that group. The current group is always listed in the left frame, indented underneath the "Home" link.

If the user already has an active account, they can add other groups if they have an access code. First, the user can click on the link titled "Manage Account", located in the left frame. Now in the main window, near the top, there will be a link titled "Activate Access Code". The user will be presented with a entry field to enter the access code. If it is valid, the user's account will be immediately updated.
I don't have
a user ID for NetTutor. How do I get one?
If a user doesn't have user ID for NetTutor, they should first contact their Instructor to see if there is a specific access code they should be using. If the Instructor and school doesn't know about NetTutor, the user should then try looking at their book's website for more information about NetTutor and Online Tutorials. Access codes provide a way of registration into one or multiple groups. With a single access code, a user can be registered into one group, or be registered into many groups. If the user is creating their own account, then they will more than likely need an access code.
I'm trying
to register, but there's no where for me to set my password. What about my password?
In most cases, during registration the user is not prompted to set their password. They only need to create a user ID, provide their first and last name, a valid email address, and their institution name. After submitting the registration form, NetTutor® will send an email to the user's email address, and this email will include the user ID, and an initial random, eight character password.If the user is registering through the COPPA compliant, anonymous user registration page, then the user only needs to create a user ID, a password, and the institution name.
I forgot my
password! How can I have it sent to me?
If the user registered with the standard registration method (not anonymous registration), then the user can have their password emailed to them. From the login page, the user can click on the link titled "Did you forget your password?", located in the left frame. This will allow the user to enter their user ID and email address in the main window. If the user ID and email match a valid account in NetTutor®, then an email with the user ID and password will be sent to the email address associated with the account.
What are Worksheets,
and how do I use them?
Worksheets are created by the instructor or tutor for the students. The student can click the "Worksheets" icon to bring up a list of the worksheets available to submit. The user can click on the title of the worksheet to begin working on it. Once the student has submitted the worksheet, it is sent to the instructor to be graded. After the instructor has graded the worksheet, the grade will be listed in the column provided.
The instructor has the option to make the worksheet a one time submission or continual submission until it is graded. If the user is allowed to resubmit the worksheet, then clicking on the worksheet title will bring up the worksheet in a whiteboard. If the user is not allowed to resubmit the worksheet, then clicking on the worksheet title will bring up an image of the submission.
